A bayside and beach suburb with a village feel and relaxed atmosphere.
Altona, Melbourne (west)
Altona is almost sleepy hollow by the beach. Once upon a time, it was shunned as a reject suburb, because of the nearby refineries, but these days it is home to unpretentious family types who like living on or near the beach, but don’t want to sell their right kidney, left lung and only child to be able to afford it. Altona certainly has an old time feel to it, but that is part of its attraction. (More info below and to your left <<<)

If this place were a shoe, it would be a Nine West and a thong
Believe it or not, when Altona was first planned, it was meant to be the Miami of Melbourne. But, it is nothing like it. NOTHING.
Altona is relaxed, unpretentious, and is undergoing a bit of a revamp with the opening of a few good cafes.
The local shopping strip hosts a street market on Tuesdays. The beach has a good bike/walking path, which goes all the way to Essendon at one end, and Altona Meadows at the other. There are some good parks, plenty of sporting clubs and a small but active arts community.
The architecture varies from Federation to modern townhouses. The streets are mostly well looked after with good landscaping. Parking is no problem. The vibe: family village. Shoe equivalent: Nine West, thongs. Would suit: ages 35+, families, professionals. Location: beach. Distance from city centre: 17km. Direction: West.
