Fitzroy
Fitzroy
The cafe, arty, grungey, boho capital of Melbourne. Fitzroy is full of colour and life.

Fitzroy, Melbourne (inner north)

Fitzroy was your quintessential working class suburb with street after street of small brick, workers' cottages. Now, it's a temple to the arty, creative, boho, grungey, bookish, politically aware set. Fitzroy is easy walking distance from the city centre, and has some of the best cafes and pubs in Melbourne, and a long and interesting shopping strip. It's great for people watching. (More info below and to your left <<<).

Brunswick Street is the main shopping and cafe strip in Fitzroy. You could easily spend at least two hours here just window shopping. If you hang around for lunch, dinner or a drink, then factor in another hour or two. Gertrude Street is much smaller but offers some interesting shops and good eating places.

In recent years, Fitzroy has undergone a gentrification of a creative kind. Some of the small industries that operated in the back streets have shut up shop, developers and architects have moved in and turned warehouses into designer apartments. It's becomeso hop to live here that the original alternative types have moved out to make way for left-leaning professionals. But trend-oids, students and professionals aside, Fitzroy still has a largish public housing population.

You are more likely to find more people aged under 45 here than almost anywhere else.

The streets vary from narrow to moderately wide with plenty of trees. The public transport is good. It's mostly trams which means slow crowded journeys during peak hours.

Parking can be hard: The vibe: politics and art over a machiatto. Shoe equivalent: Converse. Would suit: singles, couples, students, professionals, gays/lesbians. Location: inner city. Distance from city centre: 2km. Direction: north.
