A good beach and one of the fastest growing outer suburbs.
Frankston, Melbourne (south)
Frankston is mainstream suburbia by the bay. It is a long way out of the city centre (at last 1hour drive or train trip), it is HUGE and is very popular with young families on average incomes. It has a clean beach that fills to capacity during summer. It's a short drive away from some great holiday spots on the Mornington Peninsula, and is one of the fastest growing regions of Melbourne. Frankston has some lovely homes and really quiet and picturesque streets, especially along the coast, or up on the hill overlooking the bay. These areas definitely give the impression that you are in a laid back, seaside town.
The centre of Frankston has a larger proportion of ageing residents, while young families dominate the newer developments on the fringes. People who live out here, tend to love it.
There are countless schools in Frankston and countless churches. There are dozens of sports clubs and organizations, and there is an active arts community.
Frankston can have a bit of a rough around the edges feel, so if you are after cool cafes you won’t necessarily find them here. It also has a sprawling, almost messy and large shopping district, where footpaths could do with a seriously good clean. It’s not the most appealing of shopping centres with a few empty shops in most streets, but it certainly is the largest one in what is a big growth corridor, so expect crowds.
Parking is manageable for the most part. The vibe: beach walk and take away food. Shoe equivalent: Nike. Would suit: Young families. Location: beach. Distance from city centre: 41km. Direction: South East.
