Don’t let Victoria Rd put you off. Yeah, the traffic is VERY loud, but go just one street back and you enter a world of larger period homes, trees, harbour views, and chirping birds. Drummoyne is surrounded by the harbour and is popular with families and professionals. There is a retail outlet (Birkenhead Point), a good walking track along the bay, and a good fish and chips shop. Drummoyne is only about a 10 minute drive from the city centre, outside the morning and evening peak hour. During peak hour it will take a LOT longer. It is well served by buses.
Victoria Rd is great for those renovating, it has all the supplies a renovator will need. At Birkenhead Point, there is a large retail outlet offering discounts on everything from clothes to homewares. And you can stock up on your groceries while you are there at the Coles supermarket.
There are several heritage listed houses on Collngwood St, Wolsesley St, St Georges Crescent, Formosa St, Dening St and Thompson St. Most houses are close to the harbour.
If you are into sports, there is a large number of differing clubs in the area.
The weird thing about Drummoyne is Cockatoo Island is just across Drummoyne in the harbour. It used to be a convict prison. One of its inmates, a bushranger named Frederick Wordsworth Ward (otherwise known as Captain Thunderbolt) escaped from the island by swimming through shark infested waters. He was helped by his wife, Mary Ann Bugg, who swam across to help him. It is now a tourist destination.
Drummoyne can be reached by bus or ferry. Parking is usually fine. The vibe: Saturdays in the playground. Shoe equivalent: Colorado. Would suit: ages 30+, families, professionals. Location: harbour. Postcode: 2047 Distance: 6km from city centre. Direction: West.
