Marrickville
Marrickville
Street art; great Vietnamese food; and cool, young, hip alternative residents

Marrickville, Sydney (inner west)

Marrickville is a multicultural melting pot with its own weekly organic market. The suburb used to have a large Greek community, but now the Asian influence is much stronger, with plenty of Vietnamese grocers and restaurants. The suburb is undergoing another change - attracting young professionals with a slightly alternative approach to life. Marrickville buzzes with a laid back energy most days. If this suburb were a shoe, it would be sneakers and Birkenstocks

A few gourmet food stores have popped up in recent years, reflecting Marrickville's new demographics. There's a nightclub on Victoria Rd catering for the changing population. And the Royal Exchange Hotel has had a facelift turning it into a great local pub. Marrickville Metro is a small scale shopping centre with all your basics at good prices. It's not a cheery looking place though so you wouldn't go here to kill time.

The architecture ranges from old period homes in some great tree lined streets, to ugly 70’s apartment blocks in small streets, to new apartments in the heart of Marrickville. The local council is a keen supporter of the arts and cultural events, helping give Marrickville a good community feel. Overall, the suburb's main shopping precinct has a bit of an unrenovated feel. But the variety of food and fresh produce on offer is very good and cheap. It's not chi chi at all which may or may not be to your liking.
