Paddington
Paddington
Victorian terraces, style, convenience, great shops and a very good market.

Paddington, Sydney (east)

Paddington is one of the most interesting and vibrant suburbs in Sydney. It is colourful, energetic, arty, progressive, and a magnet for professionals who like designer stores. Once a rough working class suburb, Paddington has done a 180-degree and become the preferred home to those with money, and a penchant for style and inner city living.  It is very safe and very convenient. If this suburb were a shoe, it would be a Jimmy Choo

Many people like living in Paddington because it is cosmpolitan. And many more like coming here for the shopping, the bars, cafes, the market. Oxford and William streets are sensational for shopping.

The architecture is appealing - mostly Victorian terraces. Paddington is also one of the few suburbs in inner Sydney that has not been ruined with an overly large number of those hideous 1970’s orange brick apartment buildings. The streets vary from small and narrow, to large with substantial greenery.

Some of Paddington's oldest buildings are in Gipps and Shadforth streets. Here you will find workers' cottages built for those who helped build the military barracks. Soon after, two and three storey terraces followed.

Parking: can be a nightmare. Restricted parking applies to most streets. The vibe: happening and relaxed during the week, crowded and happening on weekends. Shoe equivalent: Jimmy Choo. Would suit: ages 25+, high achievers with an arty bent. Singles, couples, professionals, gays, creative types, empty nesters, and long-term travelers - if they can afford it. Location: inner city. Postcode: 2021. Distance: 3km from the city centre. Direction: East.
