11. TARONGA ZOO Print E-mail

day-trip-to-Manly.jpg
Sydney's Taronga Zoo is in prime real estate territory. It has some great enclosures, offers free outdoor educational sessions, and has stunning views across the harbour. Check out the five Asian elephants and their specially designed new home; and the view from the giraffe’s enclosure. If you are lucky, you could get there in time for the giraffe feeding sessions.
www.taronga.org.au

The elephant enclosure is a big attraction. It has a heated barn, a deep swimming pool, mud wallows, exercise yard, shade areas and a grassy field.

During summer, the zoo hosts jazz nights at twilight.

While you’re in the neighbourhood and if you are in a car, check out the harbour views from Ashton Park on Bradleys Head Rd. The entrance is on the left. There is a café near the entrance and a large green open space offering superb views. At the end of the drive there is a tiny beach, and a couple of good places to set up for a quiet spot of fishing.

GETTING THERE

Take the Taronga Zoo ferry from Circular Quay. Ferries leave every 30 minutes from Wharf 2 at Circular Quay.

It's an easy drive to the zoo, assuming you get there in the morning. If you do get there early, you will be able to get free parking on Bradley's Head Road. Otherwise there is a car park at the zoo, but it's certainly NOT cheap.
