7. PALM BEACH Print E-mail

day-trip-to-Manly.jpg
Palm Beach is a prestigious beach suburb on Sydney’s north shore, (near Avalon).  It’s home to some rich and famous Australians, and also where the Australian teenage TV series Home and Away is filmed (Barrenjoey Beach).

MAP

Palm Beach is great for a walk, surf, jog or swim. The southern end has a big 50m rock pool which is great for laps and popular with kids. There are also a few scenic and steep walks you can do from the beach which will take you up steps and uphill past multi-million dollar homes and their multi-million dollar ocean views.

At Barrenjoey you can hire a boat or kayak, and go fishing, or take in a scenic flight.

A must is checking out the Barrenjoey Lighthouse which has two access paths. The easier one, Smugglers Track, takes approx 10 – 15 minutes mins. The steeper, rockier and longer path takes about 35minutes. Don't take your grandmother up this path. Tours of the lighthouse are offered on Sundays for a small fee.

For food, there’s a café at the entrance to the Barrenjoey beach car park, next to the golf course. There are some good cafes on the main road into Palm Beach. If you get in early the Palm Beach grocery store does egg and bacon rolls from 6am. For other meals, there’s the Palm Beach fish and chippery; the Palm Beach RSL does cheap mid-week lunches; the Greedy Goat Café is popular on weekends. Or if you are up for a picnic, try Palm Beach Wine Co for its deli/liquor supplies.

GETTING THERE

Take the L90 or 190 bus from City – Railway Square or Wynyard Station. The bus travels along Military Rd. The trip takes approx 90 – 120 minutes depending on the traffic. By car, make your way to Military Rd (which begins in Neutral Bay), then continue along Pittwater Rd. Palm Beach is the last suburb on the north shore.
