There are numerous bushwalking options just out of Melbourne. Most can be easily traversed on your own, and that will require getting a map and being well prepared with water, food, sturdy shoes, and adequate clothing.

Here are some suggestions to start with:
LERDERDERG GORGE
Lerderderg Gorge is north west of Melbourne, and North of Baccus Marsh
The gorge was carved out by a river, exposing sandstone and slate. There's great scenery here, and native animals including koalas, echidnas, kangaroos and wallabies.

PHILLIP ISLAND - Cape Woolamai and The Nobbies
Cape Woolamai - San Remo/Phillip Island
The Melbourne Bushwalkers group does this walk on a regular basis. It's one of the most popular walks on offer.
The Nobbies to Pyramid Rock - Phillip Island
This great walk takes you along the rugged south coast of Phillip Island and offers fab views. It's mostly an easy walk past near deserted beaches, rockpools and a shipwreck.

DANDENONG RANGES NATIONAL PARK
This is one of the coolest (and in winter, coldest) parts of Melbourne. There are plenty of picnic spots and easy walks for young and old.
For more information, visit the Parks Victoria Dandenong Ranges website.
YOU YANGS NATIONAL PARK - bushwalking and mountain bike riding
The You Yangs Regional Park is 55km south west of Melbourne, towards Geelong. It has towering granite cliffs, and plenty of bull ants. The highest peak is called Flinders Peak, and views from there are impressive. There are two mountain bike riding areas here.
