Get around Melbourne's city centre for free using the City Circle tram and the free tourist shuttle bus.
CITY CIRCLE TRAM
Many of the old trams have been maintained for this service. It does a big loop around the periphery of the city, going along Flinders St to the Docklands. It turns into La Trobe St, Victoria St and Nicholson St, Spring St and then back into Flinders St. A recorded commentary is provided on board with useful and interesting information on many of the buildings and other structures enroute.
The service runs every 12 minutes both clockwise and anti-clockwise from 10am to 6pm Sundays to Wednesdays; and 10am to 9pm Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

MELBOURNE CITY TOURIST SHUTTLE
The free Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle runs daily (except Good Friday and Christmas day), every 30-minutes from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Here’s where it goes:

3 - Exhibition Street north of Little Collins Street
4 - Melbourne Museum and Carlton Gardens

NATIONAL GALLERY OF VICTORIA

The NGV has permanent art exhibitions, touring exhibitions, the largest stain-glassed ceiling in the southern hemisphere, a café, a courtyard, a good collection of paintings. Volunteer guides provide daily tours. And there are art after dark guided tours every Wednesday. General entry is free. Special exhibitions are not free.

Getting there Train – any train to Flinders Street station. It’s a 5 minute walk from the station over the bridge to St Kilda Rd.

NGV GALLERY - IAN POTTER GALLERY

The Ian Potter Centre houses Australian art. It was built in the late 1990s to cater for the NGV’s growing art collection. Exhibitions, tours, talks, classes and workshops are available at the Ian Potter Centre and the NGV. This is an excellent gallery with multiple exhibitions. Entry is free.
