Glenelg

    Glenelg, Adelaide (6-10km)

Rent: house rentals range from medium to high

Vibe: holidays

Location: Beach, 5-10km from city centre

Glenelg is the best known beach suburb in Adelaide. It's got a busy shopping strip, good access to public transport, schools, eclectic architecture, and is a tourist draw card. It's the Bondi of Sydney but with fewer young people. During weekends and holidays this place gets packed with kids of all ages who head to the amusement park, while adults gravitate to the beach or one of the many cafes. Glenelg used to be a quieter place but development in the 1990s began transforming  the suburb into what some locals think has become a rather ugly duckling. If you want to go on a great scenic train ride with the kids, go to the Blue Mountains in Katoomba.

There's a steep scenic train that will take you from the top of the cliffs to a boardwalk. The train ride is short but the kids will love it. It was built about 60 years ago and was used to haul up coal. It now carries tourists.

It's $10 one way and worth it.

At the bottom of the train ride there is an interpretive display area that gives plenty of information about the area's coal mining histry.
