West End is the grungey, arty, alternative, organic centre of Brisbane, popular with the socially aware, left-leaning cool cats. It is the Fitzroy of Melbourne and the Newtown of Sydney. Here you will find eco warriors, organic food devotees, students, wealthy alternative-esque professionals, live music fans, old timers unaffected by the gentrification, homeless dudes, indigenous Australians, and some lovely ageing Greek people. Asian family friendly suburbs in Sydney 9 Months ago

We are a mixed Asian- white Australian family with small children looking to move to Sydney. Any ideas on suburbs that are ethnically diverse, so our children are not surrounded by just one ethnicity at the local school? Also not too expensive? But relatively safe and family friendly? A big ask, I know. Any ideas appreciated, we're pretty clueless at this point.
We were thinking inner west, but it all seems pretty expensive.

Hi Jayne, Burwood and Strathfield will be good options. Otherwise Dulwich Hill or Marrickville. All are in the inner west which is a very friendly area. Strathfield can be expensive but it has a good shopping centre, plenty of Korean and other Asian shops, schools, good transport etc. Burwood is similar to Strathfield. You can't go wrong in any of the suburbs mentioned.

I stay in Chatswood and it pretty much meet all your criteria.
