West End

    West End, Brisbane (0-5km)

Location: River, Parks, Inner city, Near Uni of Qld

Rent: house rentals range from medium to high

Vibe: cool cat coffee heaven

Once upon a time West End was a bit of a rough, and multicultural working class area. Now it is cafe central with a happening vibe and a fantastic weekend market. West End is the grungey, arty, alternative, organic centre of Brisbane, popular with the socially aware, left-leaning cool cats. It is the Fitzroy of Melbourne and the Newtown of Sydney. Here you will find eco warriors, organic food devotees, students, wealthy alternative-esque professionals, live music fans, old timers unaffected by the gentrification, homeless dudes, indigenous Australians, and some lovely ageing Greek people. Best retirement suburb in Sydney 8 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Trying to get some idea of a good suburh for retirement in Sydney. Just think of being old, can't drive and really can't walk very far or up steep slopes.

Near beach would be a bonus.

Thanks for your suggestion. We are thinking of picking Bondi Junction because of the following reasons:
1) Close to train/buses
2) Lots of shops, supermarket, cafes, library etc
3) Mid-pt between city or Bondi beach.
4) Reasonable rental return and capital growth potential if we need to move into a nursing home later.

Does that sound like a good choice?
