Brighton, Melbourne
Location: Beach, Bay
Vibe: black, shiny 4WDs on parade
Rent: 2bdrm house $350 - $800
Man, come to Brighton on a weekend morning and you'll see what this place is all about. Firstly, you have to say Brighton with a refined accent. Brighton is an affluent, upper middle class, picturesque, family oriented, beach and bayside suburb in Melbourne's south east. It's popular with the over 45s crowd, and has its fair share of matronly style women with big blonde hair, bling and 4WDs (SUVs). (More information below... )

Hi all,
I'm thinking of renting a place in Eastgardens, but I'm in the UK right now so it's hard for me to go and check it out! So, I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of what the neighbourhood is like. All I know is that there is a big shopping centre. What's the area like?

Hi, Eastgardens is suburbia. It's got plenty of family homes, and yes it has a huge shopping centre. If you don't have a car while living in Eastgardens, just make sure you live close to the shopping centre because you'll be able to catch buses from there to almost anywhere.
It's a safe area, nothing flash. It's close to Maroubra and the airport.

Thanks for your help! It's good to know it's a safe neighbourhood. Is there much disturbance from the airport?

I'm not sure to be honest but if it's anything like other parts of Sydney, Eastgardens will get its share of flights.
Essentially, it could mean that one weekend a month the flights will start coming in early - as in 6am. It's a loud wake up call.
I think most of the planes are directed to come in from the water to minimise disruption to residents.
The last flight out each night is at either 10pm or 11pm.
As for safety, most Sydney suburbs are safe. It's just some of the outer western suburbs that can be dodgey. Also Redfern can be a bit rough. East Redfern though is fine.
