Vibe: black, shiny 4WDs on parade
Rent: 2bdrm house $350 - $800
Man, come to Brighton on a weekend morning and you'll see what this place is all about. Firstly, you have to say Brighton with a refined accent. Brighton is an affluent, upper middle class, picturesque, family oriented, beach and bayside suburb in Melbourne's south east. It's popular with the over 45s crowd, and has its fair share of matronly style women with big blonde hair, bling and 4WDs (SUVs). (More information below... )

Public schools in Sydney are good. Unfortunately, over the last few years under the previous government, a lot of money went into the private system, and that government did a lot to try and sully the name of public schools. Consequently, people started believing the spin. Now that Howard is out, the new government says it is going to inject more money into public schools. So, that could change people's perceptions.
That's not to say that all public schools are good. But generally speaking, if you live in a good area, the public schools are good.
As for what area to live, it depends on what you find important. Beaches? Open space? Being close to the city? It kinda also depends on how much money you have because Sydney is not cheap.
I've noticed a fewpeople in this forum have recommended Randwick and it is a good family area. Balgowlah on the north shore is also good but perhaps not as easy to get around from as Randwick.
Anyway, think about what you would like and maybe I can help out.

Yeah, it depends on how much money you have and what sort of area you want to live in.
In the inner west, you could try Rozelle or Haberfield or Drummoyne. Annandale is a good area too but I'm not sure what schools they have. There is a secondary school in Leichhardt which is next door to Annandale.
