Hi,
I'm a professional moving to Sydney in November and am not sure where to live.
I'd prefer something that's cool but not pretentious.
And it has to be close to the city.
Any suggestions?

If you go to the FAQ section of this website and scroll down to 'Where should I live" - you might get more of an idea.
I'm a big fan of the inner west. Balmain can be a bit on the pretentious side. Try Rozelle.

Try Paddington. Or go for Newtown which is very cool and grungey.

Potts Point is a fantastic spot. You can walk to the Opera House and the city in 15 minutes.
It's got the right mix of cool and cred! Wonderful restaurants and bars. New gourmet stores are opening and there's just about everything you should need.
Challis Ave has great cafes especially La Buvette - try the bacon and egg panini. Victoria St is a little more low key, and you sometimes have to fight your way through the backpackers - but there are great cafes and restaurants there as well.
There are singles, there are gays, there are young families, there are older couples. There are modern apartments, old stylish ones - and everything in between.

Yeah, but a lot of the eastern suburbs can be expensive. If you're not too fussed about how far out of the city centre you want to live, try a place like Burwood. It's got plenty of cafes, shops, and frequent train and bus services to all parts of Sydney. Burwood is in the inner west.
Otherwise, as far as a holiday vibe goes you really can't beat Manly. Every weekend in Manly is like a holiday.
