Location: Beach, 5-10km from city centre
Glenelg is the best known beach suburb in Adelaide. It's got a busy shopping strip, good access to public transport, schools, eclectic architecture, and is a tourist draw card. It's the Bondi of Sydney but with fewer young people. During weekends and holidays this place gets packed with kids of all ages who head to the amusement park, while adults gravitate to the beach or one of the many cafes. Glenelg used to be a quieter place but development in the 1990s began transforming the suburb into what some locals think has become a rather ugly duckling. I went to an interesting cafe in Annandale for lunch last Sunday. It's called The Gallery cafe on Booth Street.
There are smaller tables, a communal table, and I think it may have garden tables as well but I can't be sure. There is artwork on the walls for sale. The food was good and the service was friendly. We didn't book and they still found space for us but I would imagine it would be best to book if you were going at a busy time.
