Location: Beach, 5-10km from city centre
Glenelg is the best known beach suburb in Adelaide. It's got a busy shopping strip, good access to public transport, schools, eclectic architecture, and is a tourist draw card. It's the Bondi of Sydney but with fewer young people. During weekends and holidays this place gets packed with kids of all ages who head to the amusement park, while adults gravitate to the beach or one of the many cafes. Glenelg used to be a quieter place but development in the 1990s began transforming the suburb into what some locals think has become a rather ugly duckling. The best long lunch in sydney would have to be sitting on the woolloomooloo wharf - either at salon blanc, otto, manta ... and if the sun's out, get a table on the wharf rather than inside! Not only is it good dining, but it's like a cat walk - you can check out all the wannabes, has-beens, and the people on parade along the wharf. It's a good introduction to sydney - just make sure you stay away from John Laws who dines at Otto daily.
