Location: Harbour, Inner city

This is the upmarket organic hub of Sydney. It’s got some great cafes, restaurants and shops, a weekly second hand or flea market, a good community feel and lots of Victorian era workers’ cottages, many of which have been renovated. It’s right next door to Balmain and has all of the good points of Balmain, but in a more relaxed setting. (More info below...)

Matt at The Barberia, 323 Crown St, Surry Hills. Ph - 9360 3452

A friend of mine has been gong to Matt for years and said he was a really good hairdresser.

He is!!!!

It's a small space, quirky fittings, it has an unpretentious grunge feel, and Matt is one very happy, witty, smart, and above all very talented hairdresser who uses old barber chairs!

He can look at your face and tell you what style will suit you.

Women's cuts $60 or $65.

I have finally found a hairdresser that I will go back to!

Matt is awesome. I wasn't quite sure what sort of haircut I wanted but I did know what I didn't want (after so many bodgy cuts by others). Matt is lovely, so friendly and attentive. He listened to everything I had to say and then made a suggestion ... which turned out to be the best haircut I have ever had!! For the first time in many, many years, I left a hair salon and didn't tie my hair back! I left with a fantastic haircut (which was complimented by a fantastic blow dry by his assistant- so stylish!).

I had hair just past the halfway mark on my back and for a wash, stylish cut and blowdry, it cost $70.

I HIGHLY recommend Matt at The Barberia! Big thumbs up!!!

I've been using the same hairdresser in Sydney for a few years but for a while now have not been happy with him. It's hard to break ties with your hairdresser. You feel guilty, like you're cheating on them.

Anyway, I decided it was time to put an end to the Catholic guilt stuff and booked in with Matt. I asked him to cut my hair a bit shorter than what I would normally go for because my hair grows so quickly. I quite liked what he did but was a bit concerned about the length. Maybe it was a bit too short?

Well, later that night, I had friends over for dinner and they all told me they really liked the cut, that it wasn't too short and that it really suited me. Fab! Nothing like honest girlfriends to set you straight.

I love the new style I have. It's so easy to look after and I really don't have to do anything to it apart from dry it. That's just the way I like it.

I forgot to mention that my cut and colour (half head of foils) cost $155.

Matt charges $48 for men's haircuts - and that means a cut and style. He charges less if you are after a clipper job. I only know this because I overheard him tell a walk-in how much he charges.
