An old suburb with Victorian architecture, a beach and city views.
Williamstown, Melbourne
Williamstown is the middle class, beach-side hangout on the western side of Mebourne. It once had a large ship building industry and plenty of blue collar workers. These days, it is home to latte sipping mums and dads with 4WDs, and some of the best preserved Victorian architecture in Melbourne. On weekends Williamstown is packed with locals and visitors having lunch in century old buildings. (More information below...)
There is a deep history to Williamstown evident in the Victorian architecture. Some homes are large, beautifully restored, and are set in wide, tree lined streets. Other houses are small and have been architecturally violated.
Williamstown has good views of the city across the bay, a well kept beach, parks along the shore, a long bike and walking path, a great village shopping centre and plenty of sporting clubs. It’s got a good community feel and it’s provided two Victorian Premiers.
Parking can be hard around the shopping village but is otherwise OK. The vibe: beach holiday. Shoe equivalent: black work shoe, Colorado, thongs. Would suit: ages 25+, singles, professionals, families, empty nesters. Location: beach. Direction: West
