Looking for the atmosphere of a small coastal town? In the 1950s? Clovelly is the place. Tucked between the bigger, better-known suburbs of Bronte and Coogee, Clovelly has a quiet, laidback atmosphere. It’s a great spot for families, or anyone wanting a peaceful retreat just 25 minutes from the city. The ‘beach’ is actually a long narrow inlet with rocky sides and concrete platforms. It’s good for swimming but even better for snorkelling, with plenty of fish about including Bluey the resident Groper.
As for shopping, there are four groups of shops along various parts of Clovelly Rd. For those daily bits and pieces there’s a great little strip of old-school shops at the intersection of Fern St and Clovelly Rd. It comes complete with a greengrocer, liquor store, cafes and even a butcher.
Accommodation is mostly free-standing or semi-detached homes, with a sprinkling of apartment blocks from the 30’s and 70’s. There’s just one bus route into the city, and you’ll soon end up recognising the locals.
