Dulwich Hill
Dulwich Hill
A suburb in the process of change. Professionals are moving in to what was once traditional working class, migrant territory.

Dulwich Hill 2203

How much do you pay for a Portuguese custard tart on the lower north shore or the eastern suburbs? $3.50? Ripped off! In Dulwich Hill a piece of culinary heaven will set you back around $1.40, and it's baked fresh on the premises. And if you like Lebanese sweets or good chorizo, Dulwich Hill again is a winner. This suburb is a kaleidoscope with professionals, families, established migrants, a handful of gays, and backpackers. (More information below... )

If this suburb were a shoe, it would be an old pair of Campers, and Adidas

OK, so the main shopping strips on New Canterbury Rd and Marrickville Rd appear unrenovated, even downtrodden. And some look like they could do with a good wash, but in a way, that’s what makes this place interesting. Dulwich Hill is predominantly working class and multicultural. But increasingly, professionals, gays, couples, singles and young families are moving in transforming the area, gentrifying it.

The suburb has plenty of charming period homes - Federation, Gothic, Edwardian -  in tree lined streets, but also some unattractive 40’s and 70’s style apartment blocks in need of a serious make-over. It’s definitely a place in transition.

Parking is usually fine. The vibe: unassuming, unpretentious, a step back in time. Shoe equivalent: Adidas, and old Campers. Would suit: anyone who doesn’t have to be at the centre of things, singles, professionals, families, gays, travellers. Location: multicultural inner west. Postcode: 2203. Distance: 9km from city centre. Direction: West.
