A groovy low key suburb with a small but creative village hub.
Summer Hill 2130
Once upon a time there were small, basic shops that catered for the working and lower middle classes. A place where mums and dads, kids, couples and some oldies lived, in a suburb not really considered cool. Then, new people started moving: singles, couples, gays and young families, refugees from the overpriced eastern suburbs. And so the face of Summer Hill began changing. It became kinda funky. Cool! (More info below...)
Victorian and Federation cottages, art deco apartments
Would Suit:
Singles, Professionals, Families, Gay/lesbian
Usually good
Vibe:
Village feel with a bit of edge
If this suburb were a shoe, it would be a pair of Campers
Summer Hill also began attracting people who wanted to live in a place with an unpretentious village atmosphere. New funky cafes and homewares shops opened up to cater for the newcomers. Old shops were taken over and given a new lease on life.
And prices in the windows of the real estate agents began rising. Residents held their breath. Would this be a windfall? How would it change the community? But the essence of a village remained. And so did a really really good wine shop that specialises in boutique drops from small Australian wineries.
The houses appealed to the newcomers - Victorian and Federation architecture in tree lined streets. Of course there were a few ugly orange brick 1970’s apartment blocks, but that was OK. The new arrivals had found a great place to spend time, to drink coffee, and live happily ever after.
Parking: usually fine, but can be tricky around the village. The vibe: village feel with a bit of edge. Shoe equivalent: Campers. Would suit: ages 30+, people who are slightly unconventional and don’t follow trends, singles, professionals, families, gays. Location: 5 – 10km from city. Postcode: 2130. Distance: 7.5km from the city centre. Direction: West.
