Glenelg is the best known beach suburb in Adelaide. It's got a busy shopping strip, good access to public transport, schools, eclectic architecture, and is a tourist draw card. It's the Bondi of Sydney but with fewer young people. During weekends and holidays this place gets packed with kids of all ages who head to the amusement park, while adults gravitate to the beach or one of the many cafes. Glenelg used to be a quieter place but development in the 1990s began transforming the suburb into what some locals think has become a rather ugly duckling. Glenelg has the only remaining tram line in Adelaide. It runs from the beach to the city centre.
The shopping strip on Jetty Rd is one of the few places in Adelaide that has plenty of activity seven days a week.
There is a marina in Glenelg, and plenty of holiday accommodation.
Glenelg is a good destination for weekend breakfast and a walk. It is the finishing point for the annual 12km City-Bay fun run held in September; and is the place the Greek Orthodox Church celebrates the Epiphany for the Orthodox - where a cross is thrown into the waters and men race to see who can reach the cross first.
Politically, it has tended to be conservative territory but is now a swinging seat.
