Paddington
Paddington
An inner city cafe culture suburb popular with students and professionals.

Paddington, Brisbane (0-5km)

Bingo! Paddington is one of Brisbane's best suburbs. It's a more upmarket version of West End, and is the Balmain of Sydney. It has nightclubs, cafes, bars, restaurants, antiques shops, independent stores, fab views and is a magnet for the more arty, left leaning books and cafe set.  Paddington is hilly, has plenty of renovated workers cottages and Queenslander houses, trees, and an interesting history. If this suburb were a shoe, it would be a Camper and Kenneth Cole

Paddington is an inner city suburb of Brisbane just 2km west from the city centre. It is largely self contained with grocery stores, a great deli, vintage clothing stores, antiques, boutiques, cafes, bars, shoe shops and appealing architecture.

It was the place Irish Catholics and then migrants from southern Europe gravitated to up until the 1970's. Then, gentrification kicked in.

In the 1980's students (QUT is nearby in Kelvin Grove) and young professionals began calling Paddington home, giving it an injection of activity and life. In recent years, more older parents with young children have bought into the area, helping raise the value of property. Paddington is not cheap.

This change in demographics also brought development: old buildings were knocked down to make way for new architecture, some good, some not so good.

Paddington became the centre of Brisbane's punk and hard rock music scene in the 1980s, playing host to some of Australia's best bands of that time including The Saints, Died Pretty, The Go-Betweens and Razar. There is still a music scene here but it's not as prolific as it used to be.

Weekends are always busy here but never overly so.

Parking can be hard on weekends especially at lunch time. Vibe: coffee and art. Shoe equivalent: Campers, Kenneth Cole. Would suit: students, professionals, families, couples, empty nesters. Location: inner city. Distance from city centre: 2.5km. Direction: West. Postcode: 4064
