A few years ago you were virtually frowned upon if you said you lived in Maroubra. These days, you have to be earning good money to afford a home here. Maroubra is definitely family territory with a beautiful beach, a strong beach culture, a mixture of brick homes and apartments, and a large, spread out shopping district. Public transport is good. Once a low key, traditionally working class suburb with a big Greek community, Maroubra is in the midst of a change. New high-rise apartment blocks are going up at the junction to cater for the new crowd of younger professionals moving in.
In Maroubra, you can find shops which are a throw back to the 70’s, a pharmacy which claims to be the cheapest in Australia, and plenty of brick houses, some small, some large. And there are plenty of cheap Asian cafes and take-away food places.
A down-side to Maroubra is - it is home to the Bra Boys - a bunch of surf and beach mad guys who are either loved, or loathed as drunken hoodlums. There is a part of Maroubra that has public housing and that area does not have a good reputation.
Parking is usually fine though it can get tricky around the junction. The vibe: a swim at the beach with the family. Shoe equivalent: slip on shoes, thongs. Would suit: ages 25+, families, young couples, professionals. Location: beach. Postcode: 2035. Distance: 10.5km from the city centre. Direction: South East.
