Essendon
Big houses, tree-lined streets and private schools.
Essendon, Melbourne (inner north west)
Essendon is Pleasantville, thoroughly middle class family territory. You know - mum, dad, two kids, the private schools, the 4WD, and the dog. It’s also the place Steve Irwin spent the first few years of his life; and the suburb people on the north side of Melbourne aspire to live in because of its wide streets and well preserved period homes. Property prices here are not cheap. (More information below and to your left <<<)

Essendon is a very large suburb with big Federation and Edwardian homes, tree-lined streets, a few of those ugly 70’s style yellow or orange brick apartment blocks, and quite a few schools.
Essendon has its own Aussie Rules football team - the Bombers (boooo), and a great plant nursery and café adjacent to the picturesque Maribyrnong River.
Because the suburb is so large, there are three shopping strips, two of which have a good village atmosphere. The size of the suburb, though, tends to give it a bit of a disjointed feel.
Public transport is good. Essendon is quite Anglo, with a smattering of Italian. Parking is usually fine. Vibe: let’s go for a walk around the river. Shoe equivalent: Country Road, Colorado. Would suit: families, professionals, empty nesters. Location: River, parks, 5-10km from city centre. Direction: North West.
