Warehouse conversions, close to the city, and a fave with the cool cats.
North Melbourne, Melbourne (inner west)
Back in the days before gambling was legalised, North Melbourne had “cafes” in back street warehouses for those with an itch to try their luck. Now, those warehouses are pricey split-level homes for professionals, and creative types. North Melbourne is a stone's throw from the city centre, yet has escaped the yuppies. Instead, the cool cats have moved in. (More information below and to your left <<<)
If this suburb were a shoe, it would be Birkenstocks and Puma
North Melbourne is an intersting suburb. In recent years it has become popular with professionals and arty types, and for decades has had a large public housing population. The two rarely seem to mix.
It has its own Aussie Rules footy club (the Kangaroos, boooo), plenty of cafes, and has Victoria Market and the city on its doorstep.
The architecture is mostly Victorian terraces, a few 70’s and 80’s style apartment blocks, and a good number of warehouse conversions. Public transport is quite good with regular tram services. The train station is situated in the industrial zone, away from the residential areas! Yeah, that makes sense. Not!
Parking can be hard in some streets because of parking restrictions. The vibe: cool cats in bars, and struggletown. Shoe equivalent: Birkenstocks, Puma. Would suit: students, professionals, empty nesters. Location: near a university, inner city. Direction: North West.
