Ashfield is family territory and the Chinatown of the inner West with its large number of Asian food stores and restaurants. It’s quite multicultural and has a mix of working and middle class residents. There are plenty of older style apartments,and large period homes which were built more than 100 years ago when Sydney's wealthier residents chose to live here. Many streets are tree-lined. It’s not the tidiest Sydney suburb, at least not around the shopping centre, and many of the shops could do with a facelift or wash. But overall, it has a vibrant energy, great Asian food and a no nonsense, down to earth feel.

Ashfield is ideal for families who are after a safe neighbourhood but don't have squillions to spend on a house or rental. There are plenty of child care centres, a handful of schools, and a good number of tree lined streets and large Federation brick homes. Distance: 9km from city centre. Direction: West.
