New Farm, Brisbane (0-5km)
New Farm is Brisbane's trendiet suburb. It was a drug and prostition hot spot until the 1990's. Then, gentrification kicked in and now New Farm has become a cafe hot spot, popular with professionals, gays, empty nesters and singles. It's just 2km from the city centre, borders Fortitude Valley and its night life options, it's on the ferry route, has great architecture down the southern end if you like peace and quiet, great tree lined streets, and some good everyday shopping options. New Farm was so named, when land was cleared to grow food for the expanding population in the early to mid 1800's.
There are three main shopping areas in New Farm: (1) Brunswick St - here you will find cafes, homewares stores, clothes, florists and a few other offerings. (2) Merthyr Village has some good food shops. (3) James St - an upmarket shopping area with a great gourmet food market. There's always plenty of activity here and even more so in neighbouring Fortitude Valley. While the Valley is known for its nightlife and popularity with younger crowds, in New Farm you are unlikely to see much if any riff raff.
The architecture in New Farm is a combination of beaut restored Queenslander houses, art deco houses/low rise apartment blocks, and new modern high rise super expensive apartments. The streets are tree lined and generally wide.This is not a cheap place to live, but it is very appealing.
More than 2/3 of New Farm's residents have no children.
At the southern end of New Farm is New Farm Park. It's a large park popular with the locals. It also borders the Brisbane River and is next to The Powerhouse community arts facility - which also happens to have a great bar and restaurant and hosts a farmers' market on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.
There is a good board walk at the western end of New Farm.
